Today, on 7th August 2020 Indian Athlete from the Indian Army Neeraj Chopra created history in Olympics for India by throwing javelin 87.58 meters in Tokyo 2020 Olympics event.
Indian Athlete Neeraj Chopra, who was considered a strong medal contender even before the Tokyo Olympics 2020, performed as expected, finishing on top in his maiden attempt in the qualification with a throw of 86.59m to make it to the finals.
In the final, he threw 87.03m in his first attempt and was leading from the start.
In the second attempt, he made a medal-winning throw of 87.58m.
In the third attempt, he could only throw 76.79 meters while he was fouled in the fourth and fifth attempts.
He threw 84.24 meters in the sixth attempt but before that his gold medal was confirmed.
Athlete Neeraj Chopra is the second Indian to win an individual gold medal from India. Shooter Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal in the men's 10m air rifle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
India participated in athletics for the first time in the Antwerp Olympics 1920 but since then till Rio 2016, none of its athletes had won a medal.
Veterans sprinter Late Milkha Singh and P.T. Usha missed out by a narrow margin in Olympics 1960 and Olympics 1984 respectively.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) still records Norman Pritchard's medals won at the Paris Olympics 1900 in the 200m and 200m hurdles in India's name, but according to various researches and the International Federation of Athletics Federations (now World Athletics), Norman Pritchard then Represented Great Britain.
