The recently released Netflix series, Adolescence, has become a hot topic on social media after it made its debut on the streaming platform on 13th March 2025.
The series is a British psychological crime drama created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham and directed by Philip Barantini.
The protagonist of the series is acted by Owen Cooper, who plays the role of a 13-year-old schoolboy named Jamie.
The 4-episode series is directed in one-take for each episode, which makes the viewing experience impressive with its continuous flow and engagement.
The premise of the series has been a hot topic of discussion where Jamie, the main protagonist, gets arrested by the police for murdering his classmate, Katie.
This is not a detective thriller with the audience trying to predict whether Jamie is truly the murderer or not, but rather it explores the influence under which Jamie committed such a crime against another child of his age.
Jamie denies doing anything wrong as he is hellbent in believing that his classmate, Katie, deserved to be killed in his hands- this unlocks the underlying psychological reasons responsible in this case.
The show portrays the negative consequences children have to bear for the ongoing toxic masculinity trends and “alpha male” culture.
Jamie justifies his crime with the excuse that Katie had rejected his confession of attraction or love, which led to him committing the murder.
With the impactful Episode 3, viewers get to witness Jamie’s conversation with a psychologist named Briony Ariston (played by Erin Doherty).
Jamie bursts into outrage, with his insecurities coming out as he considers himself “ugly” and unattractive for girls of his age.
With violent crimes against women becoming a common issue these days, Adolescence shows us a snippet of how it can affect the children who are absorbing the violence and toxicity daily.
It is considered necessary for parents of young teenagers to interact with them regularly and monitor their social media presence.
The lack of communication between parents and their children can lead to such suppressed personalities of the children as they step into the teenage stage.
Many viewers, especially the parents of boys, have expressed their opinions regarding the violent male-centered social media content as being a wrong source of entertainment.
Overall, with captivating acting and engaging writing, Adolescence has proved to be a huge success as a web series.
