Ugadi or Gudi Padwa marks beginning of new year

Ugadi is south Indian Festival which is celebrated in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, which marks the beginning of new year according to Hindu calendar.

This festival falls on the first day of Chaitra month and mostly falls in the month of March or April as per Gregorian calendar.

Well, this Year the start of the first day of Chaitra month falls on March 25, 2020 and so Ugadi is observed on the same day as per Hindu calendar.

Significance of festival

It falls on the first day of the lunisolar month, where it is believed that Lord Brahma created the universe on this day and thus it is considered as very important day of the year.

Celebration of festival

This day is also observed as Gudi Padwa in Maharastra, where they celebrate it by drawing rangoli, decorating the house with leaves of mango, donating food and clothes to needy people, special bath with oil and preparing delicious dishes and doing puja.

After all this, people also consume neem leaves which significances that it purifies the body and makes them ready for new year.
