The Queen’s Gambit, adapted from the Walter Tevis’s 1983 novel of the same name is now one of the most watched Netflix miniseries of all time.

Queen’s gambit follows the story of Beth Harmon (played phenomenally by Anya Taylor Joy) a gifted chess genius orphan with substance abuse problem.

Her escape from the real world is none other than the 64 square chess board where she plays mind chess.

However, the real catch in the story is the girl behind the famous chess personality and her struggle with addiction.

Raised by a genius but disturbed mother, she believes herself to be on the same path of self-destruction.

Ironically orphanage becomes the place where she finds two great love of her life, one destined to make her world’s unparallel chess personality and other to engulf her to the rock bottom.

Being adopted by a supportive but alcoholic mother only fuel the then dormant addiction even more.

What follows next is the enthralling story of a girl balancing the genius and demon of her personality while trying to making her name in a male dominated game.

A Real Female Protagonist

Many layers of the show contribute to its outstanding success. Portrayal of a female protagonist has never been more real.

She has flaws, she has gift, she is trying hard to make up a name for herself in a man dominated game.

Her growth is relatable and so is her downfall. And when she finally does conquer her demon viewers are left with a satisfying heart.

Even if you don’t understand chess this show might just leave you trying your luck on chessboard.
