The Queen’s Gambit Episode 4: Beth To Suffer a Great Personal Loss

Beth is serious about playing the Russian chess tournament and has already begin preparing for the same.

She is learning Russian language.

At one of the classes, she hooks up with one of the guys but her experience is not what she had imagined.

She stays over at his place alone for the next day and drinks and smokes whole time while informing her mother that she is spending the night with one of the boys of the classes.

Beth graduates from school and Alma is very proud.

Beth gets an invitation to play in the tournament in Paris.

Alma confesses to Beth that she has a pen-pal name Manuel and he would be meeting them in Mexico before the tournament.

Will Beth be able to conquer her fears?

Alma is having a great time with Manuel, but Beth is in a constant state of stress as she is about to play ‘Borgov’.

Alma advises her to relax and play more on her intuition as she is an intuitive player.

She does try to relax a little and hangs out with her friends of old chess club.

But her mind keeps dwelling on the tournament.

Next day before her match she finds a disheartened Alma performing the piano piece in hotel.

She informs Beth that Manuel has left. Beth consoles her. In her final match with Borgov, Alma’s absence disturbs Beth.

She loses badly to Borgov and is deeply affected.

When she reaches her hotel, she encounters another big loss and finds out that Alma is dead.

Cause of her death is supposed to be Hepatitis by the hotel doctors.

They inform her that her bill would be taken care of.

She calls Mr. Wheatley to inform him of Alma’s death.

But he seems highly uninterested in Alma’s burial.

He does gives Beth all the rights to inherit their home.

While returning home she orders a drink in memory of her mother and toasts it to her.
