The Queen’s Gambit Finale: Beth Finally Beats Borgov to become Chess Grandmaster

Beth Conquer All her Demons to Become the Greatest Chess Player of All Time

Runtime 68 minutes

The finale episode begins by giving us a glimpse of the tragedy that left Beth an orphan.

Her biological mother went to her father’s house to ask him to take Beth.

After his decline Beth’s mother asks her to close her eyes just before the tragic accident so she could solve a problem.

The problem being Beth herself.

In present Beth is happy to see Jolene who is now training to be a paralegal and has sorted her life out.

Jolene knows all about Beth’s past and notices Beth’s ongoing addiction.

She informs Beth about Mr. Shaibel’s death and asks her to attend his funeral. Beth also confines her fears to Jolene that she might be going crazy like her mother.

Jolene advises her that she is different from her mother.

She also returns Beth the copy of the chess book that she has stolen from Beth when she was getting adopted.

Beth attends Mr. Shaibel’s funeral then decides to visit orphanage.

When she reaches the basement where she used to play chess with Mr. Shaibel, she is overwhelmed to find out all the newspaper cuttings covering her chess career.

It indicates that Mr. Shaibel was keeping up with her news all along.

This moment serves as a reality check for Beth, who finally decides to get rid of her addictions and focus on one important thing of her life chess.

Once back at home some women from Christian Crusade visits her home and asks her to comment her views on communism.

Beth however declines the offer causing her to lose the funds that the society was going to offer her for her trip to USSR.

Beth tries borrowing money from various sources but all efforts goes in vain.

Even Benny miffed by Beth’s refusal to come back to New York refuses to even accompany her to Moscow.

Jolene then comes to her rescue giving her own secured funds for her USSR trip.

She also tells Beth that she wants her to succeed as she is very much like family.

Finally, one of the most awaited moments of the series arrives and Beth goes to Russia to play for the title of chess grandmaster.

State department provides her with the security officer who lays different rules for Beth which prohibits her from drinking or going out alone in Russia.

Chess tournament in Russia is nothing like ever seen any episode.

The tension seems to exceed with every passing moments.

The announcer at first seemed unimpressed with Beth, even when she is the only girl player competing in the tournament.

He belittles her achievements by saying that even in Russia there is a women grandmaster but she has never played men.

But as the game begins so does Beth’s popularity as she seems to crush her opponents with ease.

The locals also start appreciating her and she signs tons of autographs after the match.

With everything going on Beth another achievement remains hidden that she is holding tight to her sobriety.

Final faceoff between Beth and Borgov

Her one of the important matches is with a former chess grandmaster who is also very older than Beth.

The game begins but none of them seems to back down and at last the match is adjourned for next day.

At night Beth observes Borgov along with his opponent and others recreating the match and planning best moves for her defeats.

She returns to her room and starts practicing her game alone.

Next day after the match begins Beth’s unusual moves leads to the former grandmaster accepting his defeat.

He however is the first player in the tournament to acknowledge Beth’s brilliance.

He tells her that she is the most brilliant player he has ever played.

That night Beth flushes down all her pills while remembering the tragic car accident.

Now the time for her final match with Borgov arrives. The excitement over this unusual match is paramount.

The locals and competitors are all gathered to witness the brilliant face off. 

The match like the preceding one goes off long and Borgov asks to adjourn the match by sealing one of his final moves.

The press is waiting for Beth outside.

They interview her and she tells them about learning to play chess with Mr. Shaibel. She also asks them to publish it this time.

She is also surprised by Townes arrival who has come to support her.

They clear out their misunderstandings and Beth share her fear of not able to win without the pills or alcohol.

Townes reminds her that she is doing great even without it.

She also receives a phone call from Benny and her old chess friends including Harry, all of whom have gathered to strategize the game against Borgov. Beth is very happy to receive the support of his old friends.

She starts to feel how she is not really alone.

Next day the game resumes and Borgov plays one of the unusual moves, something that Beth and his friends has not expected.

Beth at that moment looks at the ceiling and starts playing mind chess calculating all moves.

Something she has never been able to do sober.

After one of her great moves Borgov offers a draw which will make both of them co-champion.

She however declines and game continues.

After sometime Borgov accepts his defeat by telling Beth that it’s her game.

He hugs her gently and Beth’s dream of becoming a chess grandmaster becomes true.

Also, she holds on to her sobriety thus conquering her demons making her true winner in all aspects of life.
